My Online Teaching: Try Out!
Hello friends!
Welcome BACK to my blogger PAGE! Okay, so today I'm gonna share some of my experiences as I applied as an Online Teacher. "KEYWORD: APPLIED" that means I'm not officially accepted in any certain organization/community of Online Teaching corporates.
NOW! let me take you to the road on applying as an ONLINE TEACHER. Let me be honest here *I'm honest most of the time my family can vouch for that😜* I had no prior experience in any teaching matters I'm just the humble person who was raised as the youngest child. In short I don't have a slightest idea how to teach someone YOUNGER or OLDER than ME.
Well I guess except the last time I did help my little cousin in MATH *Absolute torture the subject I mean, not my sweet little cousin😍* but that doesn't mean I'm already a qualified online teacher/tutor. There's a lot to be considered if you really WANT to be an online teacher and here I am who is about to SHARE it with YOU.
I applied as an ENGLISH online teacher, and every time I did, I often encounter the QUALIFICATIONS for the APPLICANTS is that they should have any of the CERTIFICATES: ESL, ESOL, TESOL or TFL. If you are not a pure/native English speaker, you must have these certificates.
WHY? This is to ensure that you will teach the language appropriately with its actual diction and you will have broader knowledge on how to properly speak and write the English language. In order to GET the certificates, you must ENROLL to Qualified Institutes and you have to pass the EXAM.
In my case, I DON'T have ANY of the certificates, YES you've read it correctly. I applied for the job since I can speak and write English, so why not TRY IT OUT, and I was ENCOURAGED by my FAMILY to do so.
THE STORY: I was recommended by my aunt *REFERRAL 😉* she did told me to join this online teaching corp. and she told me to just SIGN UP on the official website using your email account not FB or phone number, and that's how I applied but what's interesting in this Online Tutor/Teaching site is that they HIRE you WITH or WITHOUT the certificates, as long as you GRADUATE in HIGHSCHOOL or COLLEGE. There's a catch though, YOU have to PASS the INTERVIEW also you MUST have all the PROPER tools NEEDED.
I was interviewed via SKYPE, I also send extra information and details to the ASSIGNED INTERVIEWER my updated resume. It was really fast roughly 15 minutes or less. in the first 5 to 10 minutes is the INITIAL INTERVIEW, they will ask you a few questions, the "TYPICAL: Tell me about yourself, What are your hobbies?, How did you get to know our company?" and all that jazz.
After the initial interview the other remaining time left will be used by the interviewer to send and schedule you to another appointment, which the interviewer will send you a LESSON MATERIALS, usually just two kind of lessons provided by the company/corp. and you will be given a choice to decide which one you want to present and when do you want to schedule your FINAL INTERVIEW which includes the DEMO CLASS. *I was literally at lost at that time on how should I do it but then it's like presenting a report using PowerPoint presentation but much more techy😅".
Once your ready, you will be contacted again via SKYPE and proceed to do your DEMO CLASS, the interviewer will be the one who will pretend as your student.
TIPS! AND MUST KNOW!
- Make SURE you did your OWN RESEARCH = What I meant here is that you check out other applicants who decided to share their humble experiences by video recording themselves and shared it on the best known platform which is YOUTUBE.
- Remember that you will teach (MOSTLY) children, make sure you have COLORFUL BACKGROUND and PROPS = Like cards with animals, colors, anything related to the subject material that you will be presenting.
- DRESS PROPERLY= Although its an online class/teaching we must look presentable.
- Before you proceed CHECK your NET CONNECTION, WEBCAM and AUDIO 30 minutes ahead of your actual presentation time, so if anything bad happen you can message your interviewer and ask them for a reschedule = This is a must!
- ALWAYS and NEVER forgets to ask if the interviewer (STUDENT) can hear you and can see you with HAND GESTURES = Yes, we really have to use hand gestures.
- Be JOLLY = You have to smile and be energetic (not too much but just enough) to grab the attention of the interviewer (student).
- Make sure YOU know the lesson WELL = Sometimes the interviewer will just drop a question out of the blue that is not related to your lesson material (I did experienced this and it really put me a little in panic). But even if its not related just answer it and get back on track to your lesson material.
- AVOID long terms SILENCE = This one is really hard for me since I'm an introvert and I don't have any initiative to continuously talk while relating it to the lesson, so it's challenging for me.
- BE CONFIDENT = I know that it's gonna be nerve wrecking but just enjoy and have fun doing it.
I did FAILED the final interview, not because I'm bad at presenting but due to the middle of my presentation, my net connection STARTS LAGGING and DISCONNECTING since I'm only using *GLOBE Telecom 🙄* Home Prepaid WIFI at that time. The head HR decided not to accept me since they believed that my net connection will interrupt the lesson and would cause problems for the future clients.
Which is understandable, it's a nice experience and I've learned a lot from it. Made me realized that teaching is not easy as it looks likes, I'm actually guilty at some point since when I was still a student I have to admit that lots of times specially when I'm already frustrated from all the homework, quizzes, projects and presentations everyday that my teachers/professors made me do. I did think they had it easy because their just gonna give grades and remarks.
But that's NOT TRUE at ALL! From the LESSON PLAN then making the student UNDERSTAND the lesson too GRADING. Seriously it a HARD work! you need LOT'S of DEDICATION and PATIENCE.
To all the TEACHERS and PROFFESSORS I would like to say THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Words cannot express my SALUTE to ALL, some might think I'm over exaggerating, but it's not, once you've tried it and be part of what they do in a day or maybe in just an hour, I swear you will just shake head and tell yourself "I'm so glad this is not my actual job".
That's all for TODAY! Thank you for reading my BLOG and hope you COME again! Have a nice day and TAKE CARE wherever you are!
